Masao felt refreshed after the follicle-cleansing treatment. Apparently, removing the dust, grease and bacteria not only saved the follicles from oxygen deprivation but made the nutrients in the hair restorer more likely to penetrate the roots. Kashiwagi had made a convincing argument for the treatments; even so, the regular visits would cost Masao dearly. In the end, Masao opted to forgo a membership and decided to buy the follicle-cleansing lotion and shampoo instead.
âBut remember, your hair wonât wait,â Kashiwagi said in parting, smiling far more broadly than necessary. âYou should seek professional help as soon as possible.â
Better to prey on me once Iâm beyond help, isnât that how you people turn a profit? But Masao couldnât act tough in front of the man-whoâd sussed out his weakness. After he was handed a pamphlet with an informational video, hair care handbook, a âspecialâ membership form, and a product catalog in addition to his purchases, he said pleasantly, âYes, all right.â
A disease with no natural cure. Masao walked the darkened streets and replayed Kashiwagiâs explanation in his mind. Premature baldness. An incurable disease. Even if there was no risk of pain or death, the weight of the word âdiseaseâ bore down on him, suddenly rendering him weak like an invalid.
A sick man has no future to look forward to. He caught himself looking at the heads of pedestrians passing by. Today, of all days, not a single chrome dome to be found. He spotted an elderly man with a healthy white mane, and let out a hopeless sigh. Masaoâs hair would not last to turn gray. Realizing this, he was seized with envy and jealousy.
He had to do something. As the doctor said, stress was hairâs biggest enemy. What could he do to relieve himself of this stress? Try the follicle-cleansing treatments? Surrender immediately? Shave his head before anyone noticed? No, the office would never allow it.
Masao was a sales representative for a computer software company. Though the subsidiary company, bankrolled by a major corporation, had managed to produce modest profits even in this fallow economy, the office was not without rumors of layoffs. Only yesterday, he had turned a deaf ear to warnings that employees, from the top down, needed to stay current in order to remain relevant in this global cutting-edge industry. The company would not be pleased with a sales rep, not yet thirty, with an old-fashioned buzzcut. By thirty, he figured his baldness wouldâve passed the point of no return.
What now?
At this point, he might have to seriously consider marrying Kikuka. At least then, he would be able to take his wedding pictures with a full head of hair. Having been roundly crushed by the events of the day, all Masao could do was go home to his studio apartment where no one waited for his return.
